Get a behind-the-scenes look at Jean Peterson Design's inspiring office space. Established in 1996, JPD is an award-winning firm specializing in the development of compelling communications that deliver results. They are located in the Everedy Square in Downtown Frederick.

Why did you choose your current office location and how long has JPD been located here? 
For 20 years Jean Peterson Design has been strategically located in downtown Frederick. When we moved to Everedy Square 7 years ago, we had previously been in a location on Church Street very close to Market Street. Being in the heart of downtown allows us to be integrated into the community that we serve. Plus, we simply love downtown and all the amenities it offers our business and our staff. From the amazing restaurants where we can take our clients, to the exciting events that happen nearly daily, it seems there is always something to do and experience in downtown Frederick. Since we host client meetings, having free off street parking is a big perk of being in Everedy Square, and something you don't get at many locations downtown. 



Was it “move in” ready or did you have to design/fit it out?
Originally built in the 18th century to house The Everedy Company, Everedy Square was restored and preserved by Bert Anderson, 40 years ago. Our office has housed several design and marketing firms and we could see why. It's inspired and inspiring and the reason we felt at home the minute we came for the walk-through. While many modern build-outs try to emulate the old warehouse feel, there's nothing like the real thing. Old buildings have their challenges but they have immensely more character. 





What inspirations did you use to decorate/design the space?
The previous Jean Peterson Design office was filled to the gills with our own creative work. With this space we allowed the building to really shine through keeping artwork to a minimum and furnishings modern with clean lines. The artwork we do have is contemporary and done by mostly local artists such as Ed Remsberg. Most people notice the warehouse nature of our space followed immediately by our large Apple monitors. 





What are the most unique aspects about your office space?
Our office features exposed brick walls, rough sawn beams, and high ceilings – everything you'd expect from an old warehouse. Add to that lots of glass, a semi-circular conference room, corrugated metal paneling and unique rooftop views of Frederick. 





What do you or your employees like best about the office space?
Our staff loves the location not only because we are downtown but because of the warmth of the Everedy Square and Shab Row community of businesses—everyone looks out for one another here. For the out of town commuters employed at Jean Peterson Design, access to the major highways and Rt. 15 is a big plus. The open floor plan is another feature the staff likes. It allows for collaboration throughout the day, which in the creative field is highly necessary, and we have enough breakout space for private meetings or phone calls when necessary.

Why did you choose your current office location and how long have you been located there?

We wanted to find a new location in downtown Frederick and were attracted to the prominence of the Monocacy Valley Cannery Building on the new Gateway into the City. The quality and character of the building is unmatched and we did our best to leverage these strengths in the design of our new office. We also like the location since it is right in the center of planned development on the east side of Frederick, convenient to I-70, and within walking distance to the historic district. We have been open since April and have been very pleased with our choice.  
 

Was it “move in” ready or did you have to design/fit it out?
We leased space in the historic section of the building which was just a shell, so we needed to fit out the entire space.   



What inspirations did you use to decorate/design the space?
Our goal was to leverage the historic charm of the building yet create a very contemporary and welcoming space for our clients. We retained some of the characteristics of the Cannery using new materials like sliding glass doors as well exposed brick and beams.
 


What are the most unique aspects about your office space?
We have a mural in our vestibule that has pictures of the Cannery in operation early in the 20th century. It showcases some of the technology and people that worked here, and occasionally we have folks stop in that knew someone who worked here. We’ve also had compliments on our community room that is available for non-profit organizations and clients for meetings.



What do you, your employees, or customers like best about the space?
Many people come in and ask, “Is this a bank?”, and they are really impressed with the technology and unique features to handle routine transactions and complex financial needs. Clients love the openness of the space along with the mix of contemporary finishes and historic charm with the exposed bricks and beams.

IT company Blue Pillar is an energy management solutions firm that moved its headquarters to Frederick, Maryland in 2015. Originally launching in Maryland at FITCI, Frederick’s high tech business incubator, the company grew into a space in the heart of Downtown Frederick. Their third level office provides stunning views of the Square Corner, high ceilings, wood floors, and custom elements that give the space character.

1.  Mosaic Power
Mosaic Power’s office space offers staff flexible space, outdoor retreats, and an industrial vibe. CEO Laurie Vaudreuil wanted the space to feel comfortable, like home.  And it does.  A shared kitchen, couches, and even a hammock allow staff to take a break without leaving the office. 

2.  Welocalize
Welocalize's office is located within the Glass Factory, a 17,000-square-foot structure that was built as a cannery in the early 1900s. It was previously a tailor company and also a window factory. Today, the renovated warehouse space is home to a variety of companies in Downtown Frederick. 

3.  Someone With
Someone With began as an online marketplace for breast cancer products, and expanded to include membership based financial service for those suffering from a chronic condition. The company's mission has inspired its office design. Pink is the classic awareness color for breast cancer, and it can be found infused into all aspects of the office's design. 

4.  En-Net
Located along East Street, En-Net's office served as a former torpedo factory and gym.Today, corrugated metal and bright colors make the space pop, while nooks and crannies create spaces to work and play. 

5.  Warner Commercial and Gallagher Design
These offices share an eclectic and rustic attic space in the heart of Downtown Frederick. On the corner of West Church and North Court Streets, the offices have high ceilings, wooden beams, and natural light.

Q&A with Jonathan Warner, owner of Warner Commercial.
 

Why did you choose your current office location and how long has your company been located here? 

Downtown is the heart of my business and also my life in Frederick. The energy and vibrancy of Downtown Frederick impacts everything I do.

Was it “move in” ready or did you have to design/fit it out? 

The space was an attic with a grand staircase up to it. I worked with my brother, Mallory, to custom design the space and transform it from a dusty attic full of old junk to a bright light office environment.  

What inspirations did you use to decorate/design the space? 

We used a barn and natural wood theme with exposed ceilings that loft up and vertical wood planks to form walls. The structural elements of the building play a key role in giving the space character and warmth. Large barn type door slide across to provide a visual barrier between offices while the space above is all open to the ceiling.   The only enclosed spaces are the bathroom and conference room.  The rest of the space is airy and bright complemented by the four skylights that were added.

What are the most unique aspects about your office space?

The windows were covered with exterior storm windows that masked the windows unique half moon detail that matches the windows across the historic town green on the Trail and Mathias Mansions.

We removed the storm windows and added clear interior storms so now everyone looking up from the street can enjoy the beautiful detail of the windows on both sides of the historic green.  The common window design adds architectural symmetry to entire town green as envisioned by some of the originals architects and builders of Frederick.  I was pleased to restore this elements to the streetscape while bring increased light into the space.

What do you or your employees like best about the office space? 

Everyone loves the airy open feeling of the space and the unique warmth of the natural wood and historic structural elements of the building. The space speaks to what I love to do in my commercial real estate business. I love to bring old building and spaces back to life and Downtown Frederick is the perfect place to work!

Gallagher Design
Q&A with Patrice Gallagher, owner of Gallagher Design and frequent collaborator with Warner Commercial.

Why did you choose your current office location and how long have you been located there?

I’ve been in this location for almost 8 years. I happened on the space accidentally, when I called Jonathan Warner about an office space in Middletown. Turned out that space was way too big for my business, but the space he was subletting here, in his own office, was just perfect! We hit it off well the first time we met, which helped a lot in making my decision to rent the space. I feel lucky to be here, every day.

Was it “move in” ready or did you have to design/fit it out?

It was “move in” ready. My furnishings worked very well in the space.

What inspirations did you use to decorate/design the space?

This space is full of wood beams and barn doors and high ceilings which were perfect for my rustic tastes. I was living in a log house at the time I took the office space!

What are the most unique aspects about your office space?

The building is historic and not very large, so we tenants know each other pretty well. And… did I mention the wood beams and barn doors and high ceilings? :-)

What do you, your employees, or clients like best about the space?

Everyone who comes here comments on two things:
-- How refreshingly unusual the design of the office is.
-- How out of shape they feel after climbing the three flights of stairs to get up here!
